What can I do to add that kind of weightiness to the presence of the Word of God in my life? Let’s take a quick look at some of what goes into this.
First, I can’t do it. I simply can’t. Anything that I would do on my own is simply useless.
Everything about the process rests in the will, life, and power of the Trinity.
- The will of the Father
- The life of the Son
- The power of the Spirit
But the process also does not exclude me.
Psalm 127:1-2
Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain. In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat—for he grants sleep to those he loves.
Let’s spend a little time here:
Who builds the house? – God
Does God’s “building” preclude our and effort? – No
Psalm 127:1-2
Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain. In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat—for he grants sleep to those he loves.
Here we find two opposing truths – both true, both in seeming direct conflict with each other, each seeming to pull against the other. It is this divine tension that requires that we walk in faith and relationship with the Trinity. And it is this kind of divine tension that makes us crazy when we’re trying to codify our theology.
- God does the work
- We do the work
So, I can’t do it. Yet there is some aspect that I must do.
What must I first do?
Tune in next time…
