Let’s keep working with the imagery of a meal. We’re going to make a fine little meal here. We’ll have an beverage, an entrée, a side, and more. And let’s just lay it out on the table right here – every one of the things we’re going to look at is a way to know God, to experience God.
A high quality meal begins with well-selected, quality ingredients. And in your spiritual life, as in your natural life, ingredients are going to cost something.
How can we get ingredients?
Some ingredients must be received. A fine example of this is salvation. There are simply some things in life that we can’t make, grow, or afford. But we still need these ingredients to make a meal.
Some ingredeints may be borrowed. Almost gone are the days where we could run over to the neighbor and ask to borrow a cup of sugar. But this is an important part of spiritual life. We have always been intended to share our lives – our time, our joy, our difficulties, our revelation – with those around us.
Some ingredients may be grown. This speaks to the development of disciplines such as study and obedience. This is a place where a focused energy is put into the desire for revelation of God and his word.
Some ingredients may be bought. This is much more common than you might think, where an investment of our lives in one area, such as service, gives us revelation that we can apply to other areas of our lives, such as prayer.
A good meal will cost somebody something.
So, what ingredients are we going to use? Let’s make a simple meal. Something balanced and palatable but accessible. Something with a few quality ingredients.
Tune in next time when we look at the ingredients that we will use
