Sure, we’ve all been there. Well, those of us who have been married more than a few weeks have been there. Those times when conversation is difficult. Or when it feels like you’re missing each other. When there have been misunderstandings.

Always be Present

In our hectic, often frenetic lives, I think we’re often trying to always be present everywhere. That’s the allure of electronic media – people separated by time and space can be connected. And it can be really cool.

family time 300x300 Always be PresentBut there’s a dark side.

In our efforts to be present everywhere all the time, the practical results are that we’re never really present anywhere. Sure, our bodies are somewhere. But our affections are in another place. Our minds are distracted. Our hearts are spread thin.

  • We live in the past.
  • We live in the future.
  • We wish our lives were more like our neighbors.
  • But we’re not present - really present – anywhere, any time.

Can Internet TV Improve Productivity?

In a recent infographic, Clicker reports that not only are some people watching internet TV while they should be working but that it affects productivity.  While that’s not surprising, it certainly surprised me that their research shows that it actually increases productivity.

Now, first, I have to say that I’m concerned about ethical integrity.  I think that it’s important to give our very best in all that we do (Ecclesiastes 9:10).  And I absolutely wonder what watching TV on the internet while at work says about our professional integrity, much less our personal integrity.

But I do have to wonder about the results – increased productivity.  I wonder why people might be more productive at work if they watch TV on the internet.  Can it be that internet TV can increase workflow productivity?  Or that maybe our productivity measurement is skewing the results?

I have my theory on the “why” – that people find ways to increase their own productivity so that they have the time to watch internet TV – even though that creates an issue of personal integrity.  But this does beg the question – can allowing internet TV at work be one of our ways to improve worker productivity?

What do you think?  And why do you think that?

Technology is a cool thing.  I almost can’t imagine what my life would be like if I didn’t have a cell phone, email, Facebook, Twitter, and the ability to telecommute.

I’m Blessed

I am very blessed that I live where and when I do.  I’m happy about it.  In fact, I still want an iPad, even though they’re $500 or more.  And I want an Android phone even though it’ll cost me $30 more per month just for a data plan.

But there’s something I can’t do through technology.  I can’t actually show up over technology.  I can’t have fondue on Facebook.  I can’t actually hug somebody or shake a hand.

Why Show Up?

Changing My Media Diet

Over the next few days or weeks, I’m going to change my media diet. I’m not talking about going on a “media fast.” But I think it’s time for a change.

Why the sudden desire for change?

To be completely honest, I’m wanting to change my media diet (not unplug completely, just make a change) largely because I feel disconnected.

  • I don’t feel as connected to God as I would like.
  • I don’t feel as connected to my wife as I would like.
  • I don’t feel as connected to God’s purpose in my life.

And I deeply want to feel connected. I want for my passion for the purposes of God to increase. I want a renewal of vision. And I want deeper intimacy.

Further, I get the sense that I’m bordering on having media in control of my life than under my control as I submit to God. I find myself wanting to watch that next episode of a sitcom or wanting to check my Facebook or Twitter accounts more than I find myself wanting to play a card game with my wife or spend a few moments in prayer with God.

I don’t believe it’s God’s plan for me to be controlled by my circumstances. I believe it’s God’s plan for me to be devoted to and obedient to him.

You Can’t Have Fondue on Facebook

How is your online social life?

Seriously, how are you doing? What are you doing?

Do you have a lot of friends? Do you invest a lot of time building relationships that mean something? Do you invest in relationships with people you actually know? Are you looking for followers or friendships? Are you hiding in the anonymity of being just another name on somebody’s friend list? Do you judge what kind of friend you are by the number of people who follow you on Twitter?

Electronic social media is a wonderful thing – or at least it can be. It can help us reconnect with old friends and classmates. It can make the miles between us seem fewer. We can feel less separate.

Social media is good for
