Prayer in Fear of Judgement

Aside

Lord, I’m very disturbed by my reading in Hosea 9 today. I know I’ve read it before. But today it scares me. For some reason I can’t get to a comfortable “clinical” distance from the text. There’s a little fear in my heart.

Father, in particular, the judgements against Israel scare me. That you were willing to make them so desolate that they would eat unclean foods and miss out on worship. That you were willing to make them barren and take their children. That such loss and pain was worthwhile to you scares me. And, yet, you endured such pain – and more – with Jesus on the cross. Doing What’s Right is Important

Aside

It’s important to know what’s right. But it’s also important to do what’s right.

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it–he will be blessed in what he does.

James 1:22-25 (ESV)

Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn’t do it, sins.

James 4:17 (ESV)

Sometimes I struggle with this. I know what to do but, because I’m selfish I don’t do what’s right. Or because I’m afraid. But, in any event, I still have room to grow. How about you?

Bless God that there’s still hope!

But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

James 4:6-10 (ESV)

Lord, in your mercy continue to work in the lives of your saints – including me – to bring your kingdom to earth. Grant that we might move in righteousness, peace, joy, and hope. That our lives might be marked by your mercy.

Where You Can Find God – Mini Post

People look for God in all kinds of places.  Here’s just one uncommon place where you can find God.

When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears
and delivers them out of all their troubles.
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted
and saves the crushed in spirit.
Psalm 34:17-18

If we know that God is near to the brokenhearted, doesn’t it make sense that we might find him there? That, perhaps, by serving them and being part of God’s deliverance – actually being the answer to their prayers – we might see God more clearly?

Rethinking the Bucket List

3133001063 577780cdc5 m Rethinking the Bucket ListHave you ever considered making a bucket list.  I know that I have.  In fact, I’ve written about that in the past.

But one thing about bucket lists (or at least mine) bothers me: they’re so often self-centered.  They’re about achieving and experiencing more than doing and serving.  And they’re usually “far-off” things.  The kinds of things we think of as a destination rather than a part of a journey.

Today I was reading “Why I Hope to Die Empty” on Michael Hyatt‘s blog that turned my idea of a bucket list on its head.  Maybe the goal of a bucket list isn’t so much about doing a bunch of stuff before I kick the bucket.  Maybe it’s about realizing how full God has already filled my bucket and taking advantage of every opportunity to empty my bucket in service to those around me.  To share my journey with others without worrying whether I ever receive anything in return.

Honestly, I’m not sure that I do this very well.  God has greatly blessed me but I so often want to hold things back.  Lord, help me to pour myself out in service!

How about you?

How full is your bucket?
And are you emptying your bucket every day so that God can fill it up again?

Praying the Word – Colossians 1:1-6

Have you ever considered praying the Bible?  Below is my prayer for today based on Colossians 1:1-6.  I used a devotional format that is in Jean Fleming’s book, Feeding Your Soul (Amazon link) that I have previously written about here.  If you’ve never tried this, I’d recommend it.

Lord, God Almighty, grant that we might accept the place that you have for us in life and in your kingdom and that we might be faithful in all that we do so that you might be glorified in and through us.

May our lives be filled with thanksgiving for all that you’ve done and for what you’re doing.

May we hear of the faith and love with others and may our own lives be marked by the faith and love that springs from the hope that is stored up for us in heaven.  And where we are lacking, may you, by your sovereign grace and power, restore our faith, our hope, and our love.

May our lives and our teaching be true to your Gospel and may we not teach, accept, or allow any substitute “gospel” to supplant your truth.  And may we truly understand your grace so that your Gospel can grow and bear fruit in us and throughout the whole world.

Blessed be our triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Does Your Outfit Match?

3767729028 6278b420ea m Does Your Outfit Match?Have you ever noticed how children may pay a lot of attention to what they wear but not necessarily whether their outfit matches?  I my minds eye, I can see a little girl wearing a tiara, a sweatshirt, dingy jeans, a tutu, and rubber boots.  She’s cute but she doesn’t match.

I’ve met that girl

When I was growing up, there was a girl in our neighborhood that had even less style sense than the girl in my mind’s eye.  I know it’s hard to believe but I’m telling you, it’s true.

We used to make fun of her.

I know it’s mean and I’m sure not proud of myself now.  I’d like to think that I’m more mature and that I would behave differently now.  But children can be cruel and we did make fun of her.

I’m even worse than she was

But here’s the deal: I’m even worse than she was. Sure, I might dress myself well – at least in terms of the physical clothes I wear.  But spiritually, I’m often a pretty poor dresser.

The Goodness of God

Sometimes it’s easy to forget about the goodness of God. It’s easy to miss his all-surpassing greatness because of our “light and momentary trials.” (2 Corinthians 4:17)

But God is not a “what have you done for me lately” God. He is the Eternal God (Deuteronomy 33:27). He has always been good. He will always be good. He is the very definition of all that is right and good and holy (1 Peter 1:16, Leviticus 11:44-45). He is patient and kind (2 Peter 3:8-10, Isaiah 63:7). He is both just and merciful (Deuteronomy 32:4, Deuteronomy 4:31, Daniel 9:9). He is our great Heavenly Father.

He created all things. He sustains all things. He is responsible for all that we breathe, eat, and have (Colossians 1:16-17). Every good and perfect thing comes from him (James 1:17). And when he blesses, he adds no trouble (Proverbs 10:22).

The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, forgiving wickeness, rebellion, and sin. Yet he still punishes the guilty (Exodus 34:5-7). He is holy and sin cannot stand in his presence, yet he became sin for us so that we, who were sinners, might know him (2 Corinthians 5:21).

The Lord is great and merciful! He is worthy to be praised!

I’ve just barely scratched the surface.

So, how about you tell me a little about the goodness of God?

Where is Your Wealth?

It’s an amazing gift of God’s grace for him to reveal our places of poverty – the places in our lives where our perspectives and priorities are out of line. Where our goals are the money and stuff of this world rather than the treasure unspeakable who is God himself. Places where we honor ourselves more than him.

I know that I do this often. Lord, help me to have a right perspective and heart in my life.

How often I think my priorities are more important than what God is doing! (Oh…I’m sure I could justify my “stuff” if I wanted to. But what’s the point – I can’t justify myself!). How often I look at my earthly wealth (such as it is) and think to myself, “I’m doing pretty well.”

The truth is, I am still living as though I am poor in the places that matter most. While God has given me a glorious inheritance in himself and in the saints, I fail to take hold of it. Lord, help me to have a right motivation and to take action.

Luke 3:4-14

Have you spent any time with the Bible today? Any time in prayer?

If not, consider the short passage below. And as you do, ask yourself these questions:

  1. Do I identify with anybody in the story?
  2. What is my response to God in action?
  3. What is my response to God in prayer?
  4. Is there somebody I can share this with?

Luke 3:4-14 (NIV)
As is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:
“A voice of one calling in the desert,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.

Every valley shall be filled in,
every mountain and hill made low.
The crooked roads shall become straight,
the rough ways smooth.

And all mankind will see God’s salvation.
