The Gospel of Sin Management

One of the things I so love about the Church – the body of Christ – is that our God speaks to us through our brothers and sisters.  God often uses our relationships to make us think.  To speak a rebuke or to extend grace.  Or just to help us understand him better.

That happened to me yesterday.  I was deeply troubled about something I read in a report by the Barna Group and wrote a post about it.  In short, I was troubled because it seems that we – the Church – are not living and sharing our faith like we used to.  Man, that still bothers me.

Widening My Perspective

And I think I outlined a few good reasons this might be.  But then Steve Grossman (@stevegrossman), a friend of mine, just totally blew the lid off of my perspective as he responded back to me in a comment.

What’s More Important: Truth or Benefits?

Think about balance

From time to time, I think about sharing my faith – how, when, and with whom.

As a follower of Jesus of Nazareth, there is an element of sharing my life of faith that comes naturally as I live in this world with my faith in God. But that’s not enough – I also want to be able to give a reason for the hope that is in me to any who ask (1 Peter 3:15).

Which leads me to my question for today:

As a follower of Jesus sharing my faith, am I primarily concerned with whether the Gospel is true or whether it works?

Truth and Reality

Truth is the relationship between perception (or communication) and reality.  If my eyes work right, what I see will be true because it will represent reality.  And if what I communicate is based on reality, it will be the truth.  That is to say that if I look up and see a blue sky and then tell you that the sky is blue, I have perceived and communicated what is true.

If, however, I see the sky and see that it is fuchsia, my perception is flawed because it doesn’t perceive reality.  Or, worse, if I see that the sky is blue but tell you that it is brown, I am not telling the truth.

But how do we know what is true?

How Well do You Maintain Relationships?

I don’t do a great job of maintaining relationships. I can talk a good game but in the end I do a much better job of maintaining distractions than I do in actually sharing my life with people. In fact, if I don’t see you on a regular basis there’s a good chance I won’t really do a good job of keeping up with you.

Most of my relationships are geographic

I seem to do the best job of maintaining relationships with those I see regularly. This works well with my wife, my colleagues at work, and my fellow parishioners. But it doesn’t work nearly as well with people who aren’t in my regular weekly routine. Because of that, I tend to focus on my relationships in this order:

  1. God
  2. My amazing wife
  3. Friends and colleagues I see regularly
  4. My parents
  5. Everybody else

The problem with that is that far too many of my very close friends are ending up in the “Everybody else” category.

This is to my detriment because I’ve done a very poor job of keeping up with some close friends of mine. Those where we used to interact regularly but aren’t in my weekly circle any more. Some of them have been friends for years and have poured wisdom, spiritual insight, and love into my life. In fact one was the closest of my friends for several years and lives only a few miles away, yet we now have trouble even scheduling time to hang out. But it gets worse.

After My Hiatus

October 4th, 2009

Some of you may have noticed that I haven’t posted any blog updates in the past couple of weeks. For that I apologize first and then explain second.

I’m sorry that I haven’t posted anything in the past couple of weeks. I’ve actually been busy being the Body of Christ. I’ve been presented with a number of “divine interruptions” and haven’t updated. I guess I figured it was more important to live the Gospel than to write about it.

I do hope to post more frequently in the future. I think you deserve that of me.

In the meantime, I would like to recommend a couple of excellent books. Both were recommended to me by my good friend John Key the director of Community Servants in Smyrna, TN. » Read more: After My Hiatus

How Can Spouses be Good to Each Other?

September 2nd, 2009

81e0e2a9defb3afbA couple of weeks ago I wrote something about spouses being good to each other and why spouses should be good to each other. These were in response to a message brought by Pastor Barbie Loflin (@sheteaches on Twitter). I’d like to follow those two “theoretical” posts with a post dedicated to making theory into practice.

I Want Your Comments

Before I even head down this road I would like to say that I don’t begin to know all of the answers. In fact, I’m hoping that I hear many great ideas from you. And that because I am a follower of Jesus, my comments will certainly be bent towards the perspective of living the Gospel.

My (Incomplete) List

Here are just a few ways that spouses can be good to each other. » Read more: How Can Spouses be Good to Each Other?

Jesus is the Center

August 17th, 2009

Over the last few days I’ve been thinking quite a bit about the Gospel because of a blog posting that I read at Signposts 02 asking what is or is not the Gospel. In fact, I’m writing this in response to a request by specksandplanks. To be fair, this is probably a post I should have written some time ago and I would definitely like to thank specksandplanks for calling me out on it.

Before I begin, though, I would like to say that of all the responses I read, there was one that stood out to me, posted by Teddy. It’s a video of John Piper’s presentation of what the gospel is (an event, an experience, etc), which I also shared with my Facebook friends. If you haven’t already seen the video, you should definitely check it out here.

The Gospel is both simple enough that a child can understand it and so beautifully faceted and shaded with nuance and glory that it will take the full understanding of all those who name the name of Jesus to begin to understand it.

The Gospel begins with God.

Who Does God Love?

July 22nd, 2009

Comments welcomed and encouraged.

In his blog posting, Smile, God Hates you, Jesus Saenz asks whether it’s accurate to say that “God loves the sinner but hates the sin.”

He’s asking some valid questions. For example, where can this be found in the Bible? Why is it that we seem to exalt some weak, incomplete version of love as the highest “virtue” of God? Finally, how can we say that “God loves the sinner but hates the sin” in light of Psalm 5:5-6?

Let’s take a quick look at the Scripture that Mr. Saenz is using.

Psalm 5:5-6
The arrogant cannot stand in your presence; you hate all who do wrong.
You destroy those who tell lies; bloodthirsty and deceitful men the Lord abhors.

Before we go any further, I would like to say that I have never found the phrase “God loves the sinner but hates the sin” in the Bible. However, in contrast to Mr. Saenz and the video he posted, I do believe that God loves sinners and desires their redemption through Jesus of Nazareth and that a case can be made to this end from the counsel of Scripture. » Read more: Who Does God Love?
